Grassroots campaigns for Canucks re-signing Trevor Linden

Mark at Vancouver Courier gave a ring asking my opinion on the whether the Canucks should seek to re-sign venerable local hero Trevor Linden and, if i know of anyone “beating the drum” to re-sign him. Any campaigners out there?

I mentioned that I’d rather have him run for mayor and take over for Sam Sellout-van and if he did return, adopt a player-coach role (not necessarilty change his name to Reg Dunlop of Slapshot fame) to mentor the youthful forwards in the quest for Cup #1. I also mentioned that the wimmin want him back before their eyes more than the fellas. Am i wrong?

Capitol All-Stars Bow out after Thrilling 2-game series against Centralia Little League

A bit late to wrap up Capitol’s quest for the District 3 Little League All-Star crown (heck i’ve been moving, cut me some slack eh) … but suffice to say, twas was a thrilling finish with a 2 game do or die series against Centralia though the final outcome wasn’t ideal.

In the double elimination tournament at Nelson Field in Montesano, Capitol needed to beat Centralia twice while the hitherto undefeated Centralia only needed to come out on top once which they did in the second game (Friday) by a score of 9-5 exacting a wee bit of revenge for the 10-3 drubbing Capitol handed them on Thursday.

Thanks for Chronline for the newspaper coverage (though obviously leaning Centralia’s way) and KMNT (a Centralia country music station) who served up play by play of the games, and big thanks for Cosmo at Zhonka for the proxy connection allowing me actually listen to the broadcast across the border. Of course big thanks to Capitol’s coaches (I won’t name them here so i don’t seal their google juice) and mostly the earnest and talented lads of the squad, many of whom i’ve watched for years as they’ve grown from lil scrubs to hard-hitting, skilled dudes.

Thanks for the thrills kids (and saving me the trip to Williamsport, PA for the LLWS ;-)).

Here’s a few highlights from the 7/13/07 Chronicle article of how it went down from Sports Editor Sam Bakotich’s (obviously homeristic) “Centralia’s District Title Delayed – Capitol Drubs Unbeaten Team, Forcing Second Title Game“:

Capitol avenged an earlier loss to Centralia with a surprisingly easy 10-3 pasting of its nemesis in the championship round of the District III 11-12 Majors Little League All-Star Tournament at Nelson Field Thursday night.Centralia beat Capitol 9-5 Tuesday to put the Olympia squad in the losers bracket. And then Capitol knocked off Chehalis Wednesday to earn a shot at unbeaten Centralia.

But on Thursday night it was all Capitol in the first title showdown, forcing a winner-take-all championship tonight at 6, back at Nelson Field.

{snip}

But Thursday, the 8-0 lead was way more than enough for Capitol pitcher Leif Hanson, who tossed a gem.

The burly right-hander, with an exceptional fastball, and even better control (just one walk) threw the maximum 85 pitches, which took him 5? innings into the game.

The only time Centralia got to him was the third when it scored all three of its runs.

Capitol not only hurt Centralia with its bats, but with some excellent team speed as well. The winners, who are aggressive and fast base runners, hurt Centralia with the smallball, laying down several bunts that Centralia had trouble fielding.

I listened to the final couple of innings from recorded copy of the radio broadcast on my commute home and was thrilled to hear Dustin come in to finish the game from the mound and enjoyed Capitol’s small ball tactics to capitalize on a soft-throwing lefty.

Then came Friday and the game was in the 5th inning with Centralia up 7-1 before i got tuned in. Capitol battled back to make it 7-5 but an error allowed two more Centralia runs across allowing the Centralia reliever to settle down after a sloppy start and strike out the wee but mighty Jacob and catch the speedy Austin at first (a close call to say the least). Despite the loss, listening from afar was a treat and kudos to the announcers for treating the kids with respect and dignity.

Here’s how Chronlice saw it (though i am not sure i buy into their “we were the underdog” gamemanship) ergo: “I love when people doubt us,” said an emotional Centralia manager Mike Housden amid the postgame jubilation. “A lot of people said we’d be out in two games. But I tell you what: My coaches and I told the kids we’d work hard for them if they’d work hard for us, because we all knew we were underdogs.”

Anyhow, … in 7/14/07 “A Sweet Repeat – Centralia Wins Second Straight District Title”, This Time as the Underdog Sam Bakotich, Sports Editor also notes:

And the Centralia defense was solid, with just two scattered errors, following a sloppy six-error game Thursday. After Reyna reached his limit of 85 pitches, Ty Housden came in and did a good job in relief.

Housden entered with two out in the fifth and just about got out of the inning but an error kept it alive. Then Dan Mongovin stepped to the plate and belted a two-run double for two unearned runs to close the gap to 7-4 and make it a ballgame.

The sixth inning was pressure-packed.

Centralia got two huge runs in the top of the sixth when the Capitol third baseman threw a bunted ball into right field, giving Centralia a 9-4 lead.

It got hairy in the bottom of the sixth when Capitol loaded the bags on a single and two hit batters by Housden, who suddenly got a bit wild.

That brought up the tense moment of the game for Centralia when little Jacob Mowry came to the plate. Mowry is small but packs a lot of power, having already ripped three home runs against Centralia in two earlier games.

{snip}

Mowry worked Housden to a full count, and then whiffed on a curveball, to the roar of the Centralia faithful, for the second out.

That brought up another tough hitter, Austin Lee, and Housden got him to ground out to second, to end the game and send the entire Centralia team into a happy frenzy.

More at:

Capitol comes up short” by Gail Wood ThOlympian (sic)

Centralia led Capitol 4-0 after the second inning and 7-1 going into the bottom of the fifth. But a no-quit Capitol team rallied for three runs in the bottom of the fifth with pinch-hitter Dan Mongovin knocking a two-run double to highlight the comeback.

“These kids never gave up,” Capitol coach Ron Hansen said. “They never quit. Even tonight they fought back.”

Capitol opened the tournament with a 3-1 win against Chehalis and a 7-5 win against Montesano. Centralia then handed Capitol its first tournament loss, winning 10-3.

Fighting through the losers bracket, Capitol then beat Chehalis 10-5 and Centralia 10-4 to force a final game with Centralia.

“There was a clutch player every game,” Hansen said.

Capitol Little Leaguers Go Extra Innings for Win

From Aberdeen Daily World newspaper (who’s coverage have dropped off as Aberdeen and the other Grays Harbor teams were eliminated i reckon). No mention of the crazy 8th inning action when an Austin Lee base-loaded single turned into an inside the park grand slam (of course there *were* errors, but …).

Capitol Little League
(photo Brenda C.)

MONTESANO — Capitol outlasted Chehalis in eight innings, 10-5, to advance to the title round of the District III Little League Baseball Tournament Wednesday night at Montesano.

Unbeaten Centralia can wrap up its second straight district title with a victory in the first game of the title round, scheduled for 7 tonight at Nelson Field. A Capitol win would force a second championship game at 6 p.m. Friday.

Centralia/Chehalis area’s The Chronicle has the District 3 Little League recaps behind a $50/year firewall. BUT here’s a pic of the saddened Chehalis younglings after the 10-5 loss to Capitol yesterday – sorry kids, i know it sucks but Capitol is on a mission!

[Update] The Chronline gave me temporary access to the subscriber content (thanks!) so here is a few highlights from “Tough Loss for Chehalis – Spirited Run Through Losers Bracket Ends Behind Barrage of Errors” by Sports Editor Sam Bakotich (thanks for the coverage).

Jones and Capitol hurler Austin Lee, who bounced back remarkably after leaving the Centralia game after 20 pitches supposedly due to a sore arm, were locked in a good pitchers’ duel at first.

Both got in trouble in the first two innings, yet both pitched out of it.

{snip}

Then the disaster struck with three errors, all at first base, to help Capitol score three unearned runs to tie the game at 5-5.

In the bottom of the fifth, Lee reached his 85-pitch limit and left as Dan Mongovin came on.

Lost among the defensive carnage by Chehalis is the fact Mongovin pitched an outstanding final 3 and 2/3 innings, shutting Chehalis out on one hit.

It stayed 5-5 until the top of the eighth when the roof fell in again with four key errors.

Turner started the frame with another single, and Ben Boggs bunted him over. Another single and an intentional walk to dangerous 3-hitter Jacob Mowry loaded the bags.

The winning run came in behind another error at first, and then a bases-loaded blooper to right field scored four runs.

The hit, by Lee, scored two runs, and then Chehalis got a runner in a rundown between third and home. But a throw to third sailed into the outfield, letting the final two runs in.

{snip}

The two Capitol pitchers (Lee and Mongovin) struck out 14 Chehalis batters.

Capitol had 10 hits, led by center fielder Noah Anderson with three. Mowry, who had two home runs against Centralia, had two hits, including a double. Shane San Nicolas also doubled.

Ryan Schopp / The Chronicle – The Chehalis 11-12-year-old Majors Little League All-Stars pose with the third-place trophy after a disappointing extra-inning loss to Capitol Wednesday night in Montesano.

More coverage as i hear it.

[Update]

Chronline’s coverage of Capitol’s loss to Centralia on Tuesday {Centralia Rolls Into Title Game} talks about A. Lee’s achey arm:

Capitol came out and jumped on Centralia hard in the first inning Tuesday, getting to starting pitcher Justin Reyna for three runs on four hits, including a pair of home runs (Mawry and Lee).

Centralia caught a big break in the second inning, thanks to some reported arm soreness by Capitol starting pitcher Austin Lee.

Lee is a tough right-hander who was always around the strike zone, but he left the game in the second inning after throwing just 20 pitches total, and Centralia pounced as the Capitol pitching collapsed.

Shane San Nicolos came in and couldn’t find the plate.

{snip}

The hitting star for Capitol was diminutive left fielder Jacob Mowry, who ripped a pair of home runs.

In case you missed it, … a brand-shiny summer time Canucks Outsider podcast is up at HockeyNW.  This episode (#55) features my coverage of BC Floorball’s Challenge Tournament in West Vancouver a month or so ago.  Twas good fun watching the action as the Swiss crew thwacked the Canadians after a late night of drinking ;-).  International interviews with Swiss, Finns, Brits and Canucks.  Great sportsmanship and exciting action by veterans players and rookies alike.  It’s co-ed and cheap so check out the post for all the details.

Capitol Little League Rolling in Montesano

I spent this past weekend watching a scintilating Little League touranment game at the District 3, All-Star tournament in Montesano. I am fan of the Capitol LL squad as i have watched some of these lads for four seasons and i have a vested interest in one specific player (who will remain nameless but he rulez!).

Saturday’s game was the first time in 4 years of tournaments that Capitol beat Chehalis (some of these small towns are powerhouses) behind the valiant 87-pitch, complete game by the pitcher who also accounted for 2 RBI in the 3-1 win (for the record, the one run was scored on an error when the only ball which left the infield got past the left fielder).

The young hurling warrior dug deep and got it done in thrilling fashion after a shaky first inning against a pumped up Chehalis team, ending up with a 2 hitter for the day.

(a player to be named later)

Chehalis’ pitcher got off to a stellar start striking out 8 of the first 10 batters before catcher Tony finally made some contact to break the mojo. Soon after, young Jacob thwacked a ball hard on the fence barrier – missing a home run by millimeters – despite his dimuntive size.

Sunday’s match-up i did not attend but Aberdeen’s Daily World newspaper gives some highlights of the other games as well as a recap of the Capitol versus the host team Montesano matchup. Despite being based in the largest city of the region, CCLL has alwys taken a backseat to the small town teams who live and die for the success of the younglings and the small town squads take the losses hard especcially the hosts who had smacked East Grays Harbor 18-4.

Here’s what

Capitol 7, Montesano 5

Thurston County-based Capitol scored in every inning to keep a jump or two ahead of Montesano.

Elliot Mendenhall’s two-run double over the right fielder’s head capped a three-run third that rallied Monte to a 4-all standoff.

But Austin Lee singled and eventually scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the same inning to put Capitol in front to stay. Following an exchange of runs, Tony Davis launched a gigantic homer that landed in the outfield at adjacent Crait Field in the fifth to make it 7-5.

An error and walk enabled Montesano to put the potential tying run aboard with one out in the sixth. But Capitol reliever Jacob Mowry enticed the final two batters to hit into forceouts at third base.

Montesano enjoyed an 8-7 edge in hits, but Capitol capitalized on three early walks and some Monte baserunning misadventures.

Mendenhall, Charlie Dietrich and Matthew Jensen had two hits each for Montesano. Lee and Noah Anderson paced the winners with two hits apiece.

This means a rematch between CCLL and Chehalis Centralia on Tuesday for the title and the right to represent in the state tourney which i think is in Richalnd WA. 5PM mark it on your calendar.

UPDATE: From Dustin’s mom:

We WON! It was an awesome game. We played Montesano (whose reputation is for bleeding baseball) and apparently the players were overheard saying that it’s going to be a piece of cake game….. no problem beating Capitol. Well, we showed them!

Final score was 7-5. Austin had a nice hit. He played third. Some great defense. Dustin hit a double that was 4 feet from being out of the park and it scored Noah. Then Mr. Tony Davis hit his first ever out of the park homerun!!!! He has never hit a homerun in a game or practice! He was so excited!

Dustin’s RBI was the game winning run and Tony’s homerun was the insurance. Coaches told the boys, good defense, good hitting and good pitching. All together won the game. Monte was not a happy team!

Ross’ New Job – Snowboarder Rebagliati gets a gig in Kelowna

This press release came across the wire about my sorta-acquanitance Ross Rebagliati’s new gig as the snowboard guru for Kelowna Mountain.

ross regbliatti at 2002 olympicsCoffee talk with Gold Medalist Ross Rebagliati

In my article for Heads magazine about Ross’ quest for Team Canada for 2010 [“Rebagliati Positive about 2010″ in Heads, the marijuana lifestyle magazine] and Olympic Outsider interview [Coffeetalk with Gold Medalist Ross Rebagliati - Olympic Outsider #3], i pointed out how sharp, healthy and communicative the youthful Rebagliati is.

As such, this is a wicked smart move by Kelowna Mountain as Ross brand appeal is still massively high (no pun), and this is a great deal for Ross who can solidify his role as the elder statesman of Snowboard culture and the resort business.

His RASTA brand of camps and gear will also benefit from the increased exposure and the will be evidenced in the super-skilled and chilled boarders graduating from his dojo.  Anyhow, read it up and enjoy.

Super Series – Canada vs Russia, 8 Games, Under 20

My brother Dan Funboy got us tix for the Super Series (the continuation of the legendary Summit series) featuring the best under 20 players from Canada and Russia going head to head for 8 games – the first 4 are in Russia and the following four are in Canada (Winnipeg, Saskatoon, Red Deer and Vancouver).

Here’s Team Canada’s stellar roster which features young luminaries like Kyle Turris, John Tavares, Karl Alzner, Milan Lucic (thought he was Czech) and a thick smattering of other kids who went in the recent NHL draft (Esposito, Gagner, Gillies).

Can’t wait til Sept. 9th for Game 8! Here’s a video from the World Junior Tournament in Vancouver last year to spread the excitement in the summertime.

CBC’s lukewarm response to ex-pat hockey fans

CBC streams their coverage of NHL playoff games along with TV coverage etc. but if you are a (taxpaying) Canadian living elsewhere, you are outta luck. I thought CBC might take a progressive approach on this conundrum and view this as an opportunity but no luck – instead a lukewarm meandering response showing disregard for the love of hockey held by Canucks abroad. And frankly waiting for the NHL to do anything smart or useful is a waste of time. Anyhow, thanks to a mystery blogger quoted via Inside the CBC, here is an interview snippet and my comment. And yours?

O: I have a lot of friends who live overseas. Every time I talk to them they ask me why they can’t watch the Stanley Cup online….

AL: Our agreement with the NHL is for Canada only. NBC and Versus wouldn’t like it if someone in Boise was watching an HNIC broadcast online, eating into their customer base. Ditto for someone in Sweden (although I don’t know who’s broadcasting competitively there).

I understand the frustation, though. We’re sending this online to a population that can watch it on main net and in HD.. why give them online? But it’s the way of the future and our numbers were, I’d say, solid for a first-time, and for games that were played in the evening (not online’s prime time by any means).

O: So that’s that?

AL: For now, that’s that. I don’t know of anyone who has global rights. Not for anything major, anyway.

O: Why doesn’t the NHL sell a subscription a streaming site of their own making? So people could pay to watch?

AL: You’d have to ask them. Major League Baseball sure does, and they do a fantastic job. But each league is different, and maybe there’s a different philosophy at play between the two leagues.

I chime in thusly with this impassioned plea for reason:

DaveO Says: Your comment is awaiting moderation.

June 13th, 2007 at 11:04 am PDT As a podcaster (I make the Canucks Outsider) and an occasional ex-pat, i think CBC pursuing a way to get hockey to all Canadians is a key initiative and a worthy mission. Frankly few in the US is watching anyhow as i learned while traveling on business during the Stanley Cup playoffs and couldn’t even find a bar in NYC who’d play the games (there was yet another Yankees/Red Sox game on).

CBC certainly has sufficient clout with NHL – who are discounting rights heavily anyhow to get any US network to carry games at all (and Versus’ coverage is a joke but getting better) – i suggest CBC has enough clout to make this almost-essential public service happen. Bear in mind, hockey is not just sport, hockey is culture to us. Just try living overseas while your team is in the playoffs and you’ll agree with the “essential” part.

During the Canucks run, I produced a companion broadcast of the games (no, i didn’t show the actual games) to Canadian hockey fans in UK, China, Australia, … all of whom would eagerly ante up a subscription fee to view the CBC broadcasts. Also bear in mind, many border states cable packages include CBC so there are some rights cross-overs existing already.

Please do not wait for the NHL to do *something* – the CBC is the real home for hockey coverage for all of us Canadian (taxpayers) no matter where we live.
